Flying!
My dear friends,
Thankfully, I’ve been able to play many parts in different productions over the course of my career. Several of those times, I played birds. For two runs in 2024, I had the honor of playing CC, a cardinal, at The Alliance Theatre for The Curious Cardinal.
That role helped me tap into my own curiosity. It quelled each nerve I used to have and hold so tight. Through that show, I developed a newfound sense of wonder for the world around me. I used to be so afraid of everything but through CC’s eyes, I realized what I was missing out on and overlooking because of my fears.
This past Christmas at Stone Mountain, I was able to understudy the role of Evie, a snow owl, in their musical One Magic Christmas. Sadly, the main actor fell ill the last month or so. That was a blessing for me because I was able to fill in and experience this character more fully than if I had only understudied.
Evie played a variety of parts in the story. She opens the show and introduces the audience as vital to the experience. She flies away to check how bad the storm is and even finds some friends lost in it. She even goes to talk to Santa and brings him back to the castle.
Playing her taught me a lot about a need to fly. A need to go out and see what there is out there and bring it back to share and enjoy with the people you love.
Coming from North Carolina, the tiny town of Youngsville is so small compared to the giant Atlanta is. I’m amazed every day by how much this city has to offer. However, I can only appreciate its grandeur because of my roots.
And I’m only able to know its greatness because I flew away to find it.
Curiosity is step one. Flying is step two.
So, what is step three?
Concretely, I’m taking steps towards acting. I first moved here in 2019 and accepted a role in a short film, despite having no prior experience. From there, I did a lot of smaller roles in short films, student films, commercials, etc.
I felt it calling to me.
So, I landed.
Now, I stand at the edge of another world to explore.
I’m excited to take y’all with me!
Love,
Perlizbeth
